Orencia Information for Patients

PATIENT BIOLOGIC EDUCATION

THE DISEASE
RA (AS, PsA) is an autoimmune disease.
Your body’s immune system protects you from infection by attacking bacteria and viruses that invade your body. In autoimmune disease your immune system stays stimulated. Over production of TNF by some immune cells results in an exaggerated immune and inflammatory response and is one of the main culprits that lead to joint and bone damage.

BIOLOGICS

Biologics are disease modifying agents. It is a protein that resembles a human antibody which targets TNF, thereby blocking the effect in its continual inflammatory cycle.
Simply put – Biologics switches off your disease and allows your body to heal itself.
Benefits are maintained as long as you stay on Biologics.

TB
Your doctor has checked you for TB. This is important as TNF is one of the proteins in your immune system that prevents the TB bacteria from spreading in your body. As this is the same protein that contributes to the symptoms of your disease, by blocking its action, it does leave you more susceptible to TB.
It is important that you be checked annually.

Tell your doctor as soon as possible if you develop any symptoms or signs of TB.
• Mild fever
• Persistent cough
• Weight loss
• Listlessness
• Swollen glands
If you think you have been exposed, contact your doctor.
